Things could be a lot worse. We are still without power. But we have a generator, so we have heat, water, our food in the fridge and freezer, and we can cook on our propane gas grill. But it still sucks. I’m trying to figure out work. I’m writing this from the lobby of the dentist’s office while my daughter has her appointment. My heart breaks for all the people freezing to death in Texas. We are basics glamping while people in colder places are suffering. All I can do is all I can do. I wrote some haiku last night as I was struggling with falling asleep.
adventure wears thin
once you to start wonder if
this is new normal
more than lights at night
i miss internet access
and digital work
dog sniffs and licks me
i fuel the generator
my hands reek of gas
one of my plum trees
crushed by a fallen scrub oak
other fruit trees fine
nature reminds us
with a single winter storm
we are powerless
in the dark evenings
we play cards and the kids dance
flickering firelight
Thanks for reading. I hope you’re safe and warm wherever you are.
Be the poetry you want to see in the world,
