Welcome to the first post in the Weirdo Poetry Digital Sketchbook. As part of my creative practice, I spend time as often as I can just messing around with designs. I keep a digital sketchbook. Most of the things I create go nowhere. But, some of the ideas end up in published projects.
My sketchbook is a place for me to iterate and experiment. Sometimes an idea will evolve and become something interesting.
Here are a few of my most recent ideas:
I was joking around with my kids on our recent vacation and this idea popped into my head. It wouldn’t leave, so I gave it life. It cracks me up, and this image made the kids laugh, but I’m pretty sure it’s too bizarre for most people.
Good thing I don’t make stuff for most people.
My kids did not enjoy this comic. I’ve been told that I’m not allowed to make this into a t-shirt and I’m doubly not allowed to wear this t-shirt. Since they’re not the boss of my, there’s a good chance that this is going to be the next shirt I design and release.
This image needs a little explanation. A while ago, I had an idea for a story where a guy is being chased by some thugs and finds a strange-looking door at the end of an alley. He pulls the door open and finds himself in a strange alternate universe. It’s “peopled” by anthropomorphic creatures.
He finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation as the Watson-like sidekick to a private investigator named Taylor Smith. Taylor has the head of a lioness and in addition to being this world’s greatest detective is also a Taylor Swift-level pop star.
I was in the mood to explore ways to bring this strange idea to life and created this poster as a piece of concept art.
Thanks for reading! I hope these sketches brighten up your day a bit.
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
This is great, Jason. Thanks for opening up your sketchbook and sharing. Definitely make the t-shirt!
