Mondays are a day of waiting for me. I spend most of the day taking children to appointments and activities and waiting for them. This past Monday I waited more than usual because I also had my annual cancer screening tests. I waited for skilled technicians to shoot my body with radiation while praying that once again they find my kidneys and lungs free of tumors. I have to wait until next week to find the results of the tests.
This Monday, like so many Oregon Mondays, rain kept my company during my waiting. I spent much of my waiting time writing haiku. Here are five of my favorites.
In presenting today’s haiku, I am experimenting with typography and different line breaks. I would love to know what you think! To make these poems more accessible, I have included the plain text versions of the poems underneath the images.
pat, pat, pitter pat
pitter pat, pat, pitter-pat
rain’s secret message
parking lot puddle
daring vehicles to ford
uncertain depths
unseen birds announce
dry interval in the storm
to the neighborhood
long roadside puddle
captures perfect landscape scene
waiting for canvas
after rain—creek flows
carry refugee branches
to unknown future
Please share this post with anyone you think might enjoy some strange haiku! Poems don’t live until they are read.
Be the poetry you want to see in the world,
Jason
