Some people find email to be a pesky waste of time. Others find it a scourge. I love email. Part of it is professional. I pay my bills by writing emails, newsletters, and autoresponders for companies that need to better connect with their customers.
But, most of the reason I love email is the magic of it. I am old enough to remember a time before email was common. There is something wonderous about typing onto a screen and having your thoughts magically pop onto the screen of the exact person you wanted to communicate with—no matter where in the world they are. Even though email is hopelessly low-tech compared to social media and messaging apps, it still is a more effective form of communication. It’s somewhere between an informal text and a formal letter.
Plus, email is 1,000 times better than having to speak on the phone or through Zoom with some stranger or acquaintance. Here are 10 haiku on the theme of “I hope this email never finds you”.
i hope this email
never finds you—if you read
this know they're coming
she thought of email
as electric messages
drifting in bottles
his spam folder was
where he looked when he needed
to know someone cared
email can harm, heal,
and it can open a gate
in back of your mind
just following up
i assume you're ignoring
me—let's raise the stakes
her enemies list
populated with senders
of petty emails
nigerian prince
sent me treasure map fragment
quit my job that day
bots used email to
find the weakest of humans
we were all weak ones
spy was caught when he
sent an attachment to the
wrong email address
right now millions of
dead people have new email
they will never read
Thanks for reading! I hope this email made your day at least 1% better. Please share this post with anyone who is demented enough to enjoy it.
Be the poetry you want to see in the world,
