Hi Hibernating Friends!
March 1st is when spring starts in my heart.
male woodpecker knocks
on our metal chimney pipe
one-upping rivals
We’ve had two snow days in the past week. Because it doesn’t snow much here, everything stops when we get as little as an inch. I love the unexpected pauses in our routines. Becky is home on medical leave right now (her second and last surgery is this Friday), so nobody has to go anywhere when school gets canceled.
However, despite the cold temperatures and white, fluffy precipitation, there are some signs of spring. For example, the woodpecker who loves our metal chimney pipe is back, scaring everyone with his tapping attacks. The sound reverberates into our natural gas fireplace and fills our house with the sounds like an out-of-control riveter or jackhammer.
Woodpeckers tap like that to attack a mate. This guy has learned how to outwit his competition. We have to chase him away for a few weeks before he eventually moves on. But he or a woodpecker that looks exactly like him will be back next spring too.
Cheers,
Jason
Amen to March 1 as spring beginning!
On March 2nd, we got 6-8" of new snow. Gorgeous!
And yes, we are longing for spring, but up here in N AZ, spring doesn't last very long and can be windy. Then, summer comes hot, then the July monsoon rains.
