I’m announcing two new projects today. I have one more project that’s also in the works, but it’s not ready yet. I know I’m supposed to focus on one thing at a time, but I have found that I need multiple projects to keep my anxiety, boredom, and fear in check.
Basically, my brain is broken and so I work on several big projects at a time or I do nothing at all. However, I’m limiting myself to these three projects for now because I’m in love with them and I want them to find an audience.
That requires me to be much more consistent than I have been. In order to be consistent, I need to set some limits, create a flexible routine, and hold myself publicly accountable.
Here’s the first new project:
I’m creating a graphic novel of haiku. Here is some of the concept art:
The name of the graphic novel is currently Flirtation Across the Space-Time Continuum. I’m 95% sure that this title will stick. There will be around 300 total haiku and each haiku will have one more panels of black and white abstract art to accompany it. Each haiku will tell a very short story. Unlike my previous haiku books, these stories will not be limited to one genre.
I’ve wanted to do something like this for three years or so and I’m done putting off my dreams, even my insane ones.
However, the haiku graphic novel is not my weirdest idea. I recently also began executing an even older idea. When I was between 9 and 11 years old, Battle Beasts were my favorite toys in the world. Not many kids at my school collected them. But I loved them. As an adult, I think about those toys often. I don’t have any of the ones I grew up with because when I was at college my younger brother sold them for weed money.
About 10 years ago, I thought it would be fun to create an ongoing comic about the adventures of anthropomorphic creatures wandering in a post-apocalyptic land that resembled the Battle Beasts of my youth.
I’m finally doing it. I’m creating a comic called Vagabonds. The comic panels are a combination of my ink, colored pencil, and watercolor drawings with my photos, public domain images, and some Battle Beast toys I bought on eBay. I only have one page of the first chapter done, but I wanted to share it with you:
I’m still fuzzy about how I’m going to publish Vagabonds. I will most likely make it a webcomic of some sort. I may publish it on my site, publish weekly installments here, or create a separate newsletter just for Vagabond.
If you have any ideas or suggestions, I’m open to them.
My last big project won’t be ready for a public reveal for a couple more weeks.
Thanks for reading!
Be the weird you want to see in the world,
Jason
