Hello, Adventurers!
Today I have a new poetry comic and two gifts for you! At the end of the post, you will find links to two zines (PDF versions) that I’m giving you for free! One is a poetry comic titled, The Algorithmic Prayer, and the other is an essay comic called The Accidental Fire That Sparked a Deliberate Life.
Love is Like Sunscreen
“I love you,” is like sunscreen.
It’s a shield against the corrupting
UV rays that wither skin and foment
malignant cancers that only appear
when you are old, and it’s too late. You should smear the word love
all over before you leave the house
—every time. The application of I love you
is especially important for people prone to
forget that they are loved or for people
with a congenital tendency to doubt their
worthiness of love. So, before you leave me to brave a world of
capricious cruelty and insufficiently mitigated UV
rays, please put on some sunscreen and let me say,
I love you.
April is National Poetry Month, and I’ve been thinking a lot about why I’ve decided to spend so much of my life reading and writing poetry. One reason poetry appeals to me is that poetry is for rule breakers.
I’ve always been contrary and quick to question authority. In poetry, the rules of standard grammar and composition construction are suspended. You can structure a poem in so many different ways. The only limitation is your imagination.
Since you’re reading a newsletter called, Weirdo Poetry, you too must have something that attracts you to poetry. What is it? Please share in the comments!
As promised, here are the links to the two zines. The links will take you to the zines in my online store where they have been marked down to $0. You can download them at no cost.
The shop will ask for your email, name and address for billing purposes (even though the cost is zero). This information is not stored anywhere. You will not need to enter any credit card or PayPal information. You will then get an email with a link to download your zine(s). The zines are in PDF format, so you should be able to read them on any phone, tablet, or desktop. I’d love to hear what you think of them!
Hyperfixation: The Accidental Fire That Sparked a Deliberate Life
Be the poetry you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
Looking forward to reading the zines Jason!
I feel attracted to poetry and the arts in general because... there's so much about the human experience that's hard to communicate through conventional language. Poetry isn't an ordinary communication. It comes from somewhere where we all belong, and through a person, and so we can all see a bit of ourselves in the poet.
Being a contrarian helps with appreciating poetry. Conformity seems antithetical.
I also love the rhythm, how language can be played with, not just sentence structure and grammar and punctuation but the power of individual words. They can
Punch
If placed right. And rhythm can be the sound as read, meter and rhyme, structured, or the visual rhythm of free verse. Like painting with letters, drawing your eye to the focal points. A poem can have meaning or none, or none intended but the reader might discover it.
PS I just wrote a prose poem as a comment because there are no rules (it was actually an accident).
