Hello Dream Walkers & Night Stalkers!
Why do you keep making things?
the captain wants you!
pillage for love of country
plunder for yourself
One of the things I say the most that my children like the least is, discipline is stronger than motivation. Nobody can be motivated all the time. One of the reasons we love having our kids in sports and music is that these activities teach the transformative power of routine.
A little bit of daily practice when consistently applied accomplishes incredible things. But it’s easier to not do something because you lack motivation than to decide you must do something because you are committed to a daily practice—at least at first.
I’ve been making these daily poetry comics for some time now. On January 3 of this year, I decided I would send an email every day, without taking a break. I still love making these comics and writing the poems and stories that go with them, but the daily publication has sometimes felt like a grind.
However, I do not think I could get to sleep if I didn’t have a comic scheduled to publish the next day.
I am not motivated to make these every day, but I have the discipline to do so—and I am always grateful for having put in the effort.
I hope you are enjoying these comics as well. There are many, many more to come.
Cheers,
Jason
P.S. Today my wife is having her second and final surgery. This one will be longer and tougher to recover from. I may be slow to respond to comments and reply to emails over the next few days. But I will get back to everyone as soon as possible.
Why do I keep writing?
Because I can't not write.
Wishing your wife a successful and speedy recovery, Jason, and serenity for your entire family!
