Hi Emotional Expeditinists!
silent lightning strike
sparks conflagration on butte
we keep driving south
We piled into the minivan in Emmett, the prize of Gem County, Idaho, and headed towards Salt Lake. Emmett is in western Idaho, not too far from Boise.
After a quick stop for dinner in Burley, we headed into the fringe of the Great Basin, a massive desert in the western United States. Even though it was summer, the sky darkened around seven. Massive thunderheads rolled in.
Wind gusts pushed against our van as I drove between massive semi-trucks towing three trailers. Lightning flashes lit up the skies in front of us, but there was no thunder or rain—just dust and teetering trucks.
To the East, a massive lightning bolt connected with the top of a nearby butte, igniting it. We watched the fire spread down the butte like hot fudge down an ice cream sundae.
A strong wind blast pushed the third trailer of a semi several truck lengths in front of us as far over as it could go before the driver was able to right it.
I looked over at Becky and glanced at the kids in the back through the mirror, it was time to get through the storm and around the trucks.
