Hello Party People!
My mom taught me to write notes to myself.
I keep a few post-it notes on my desk. The messages the notes convey change over time. Currently, one note reminds me to make a med check appointment for my daughter. Another is a list of titles for essays I want to write in the next week. I also have a note with a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that I’m using in my upcoming haiku comic collection, Wild Divinity*.
The most important note is a message that reads, “Create what I want to be noticed for.”
Like a dog at the park, I’m easily distracted. There’s so much to explore and learn and do. This note helps me focus on my most important work. The work that will outlive me. The work I do here in this newsletter.
Do you ever leave yourself notes? What do they say?
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
* The Emerson quote I’m using is:
“The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.”
—Nature, Chapter VII
Notes to myself? Hell, yes! Sticky notes, index cards, a journal page in purple ink. When I was caring for my mom, I pinned a sticky note to my lamp (“I understand, mom”) to remind me how vital a role compassion plays in caregiving.
, “Create what I want to be noticed for.” I think I might steal that quote for a note to myself!
