Some people view haiku as a kind of wisdom literature. My haiku will never fall into that category because I lack wisdom. However, I often write haiku as a form of meditation. The poems that come out of these sessions often help me better understand my worries and fears. Taken together, they also sometimes point to the philosophy that is hidden from my conscious mind, but that guides my choices. But, mostly they help me capture moments of my life like the Poloriods my mom used to take.
but are you happy?
among multitude of things
i’m also happy
Poet’s Note: This haiku is inspired by a Carrie Fisher quote that she gave during a joint interview with her mother, Debbie Reynolds, to Oprah in 2011.
ancestor's morning
of bird songs now replaced by
morning leaf blowing
life's most precious gift:
knowing a moment's import
while living through it
kids plus ping-pong balls
turns any room into a
makeshift physics lab
i wasn't sleeping
all day long, most of the time
i was on my phone
like a meager meal,
there is not enough of me
each still left wanting
miss taggart slipped me
a key to see emerson's
transparent eyeball
men spend life running
young men chase validation
old men flee from death
Thanks for sharing your time and attention with me.
Be the poetry you want to see in the world,
