Hi Keen Observers of the Human Condition!
Today I have something a little different for you. Yesterday, I was at the hospital for Becky’s surgery. It went well, and she’s now home resting. She will have one more surgery in about four weeks if she recovers from this one as expected.
While in the waiting room, I wrote a series of haiku. I ended up with twelve poems. I present you with these 17-syllable scenes from a hospital waiting room.
robins drink dew and
peck for worms on lawn below
second-floor window
back in waiting room
the surgeons begin their work
I continue mine
their hospital scrubs
a peculiar shade of blue
visual message
her phone keeps chirping
no requests to silence it
nerves fray with each chirp
a nervous daughter
wanders waiting room, chatting
with nervous strangers
women play cribbage
occupy thoughts while friend
has foot surgery
waiting husband frets
about their insurance costs
is rehab covered?
my phone buzzes
brief, periodic updates
all is going well
call for Jennifer
from the room receptionist
three women stand up
room of phone swipers,
book readers, and card players
only I’m writing
people watch the news
so they can use world’s problems
to forget worries
surgeon gives report,
”it could not have gone better!”
wait for her to wake
Thanks for reading! Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
