Not everyone wants to celebrate Valentine’s Day. During the pandemic, many people are more isolated and lonely than ever. Plus, life is often more bitter than saccharine hearts. Because my brain is broken, often when I sit down to write something nice, it gets twisted into something jagged. These haiku are about falling out of love, not being in love and everything in between. Enjoy!
her wit drew me in
she ripped out my ignorance
leaving me exposed
eyes radiated
passion, anger, and humor
smile said “stay back!”
he lusted, not loved
he’d been taught confidence was
just a type of con
home a day early
strange shoes in the entryway
bedroom reeks of sex
each truth he told her
sprouted first from a false seed
he pruned back the lies
bludgeoned him to death
truth was her only weapon
he was defenseless
an apology
requires more than saying
the words "I'm sorry"
you wait for me to
stop talking so you can share
you never listen
did we grow apart
when it began to get hot
or did you just wilt?
the moment we met
i was afraid you just felt
sexual tension
show me you love me
buy me tampons at the store
and don’t self check-out
my love language is
a clean sink and clear counters
you're just not fluent
