Ahoy Mates!
Valentine’s Day, like most holidays, surfaces mixed emotions in most of us. Today, I have a collection of silly pirate love letter haiku for you. No matter how you feel about Valentine’s Day, you will at least get a little smile.
sailors and lovers
are univeres’s greatest fools
make me twice the fool
All of these haiku (but not the comic) are from Pirate Haiku, the first thing I ever published under the Weirdo Poetry label. Here’s the original introduction to Chapter 4: Pirate Love Letters, followed by a few of the 41 haiku in that chapter:
For Valentine’s Day, a coastal museum displayed the world’s most extensive collection of pirate love letters. Most of the scribbles were hard to read. But, I was stunned at how many of these love notes were written in haiku. I dutifully copied down the ones I could make out and have reprinted them below.
eyes like the stars
gentle kisses like the breeze
and rich old parents
looking at the sea
my thoughts turn to you back home
did I leave my hook?
when I saw this ring
I thought of your dainty hands
snatched it right away
watch you with my eye
and wish there was more of me
to love all of you
I am not loyal
you can't ever be faithful
if not love, take lust
your eyes are sapphires
your laugh, a bag of gold coins
your lips are fresh rum
the moment you stole
my last three pieces of eight
I knew we would wed
your love is the wind
I can't stand its full fury
it's calm means my death
my man loves me true.
he's proud of his pirate gal.
if not, run him through
can't wait to meet you.
you’re my first pen-pal lover.
you’re cooking catfish?
Be the weird you want to see in the world! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Cheers,
Jason
P.S. If you enjoyed this please share it with anyone and everyone you think might also appreciate it.
