Hey Highway Robber!
Apologies to Guns N’ Roses.
We live a couple of miles outside the city limits in an unincorporated part of the county. There are four houses on our street, one is ours, and one is my in-laws. In other words, we live in a place with lots of space.
There are no fences on our street. There are lots of tall pines, scrub oaks, feral blackberry bushes, and all kinds of wildlife.
From our front porch, we can sometimes hear owls, often see deer, and get to observe the weather each day.
During the summer, most of us take turns sitting and reading alone on the front porch. During the winter, my oldest daughter and I will sometimes bundle up and sit and watch the rain or the hail, or if we’re lucky, the snow.
You may not live in the quasi-country. But you do live somewhere where things happen outside your front door.
Spend some quiet time watching the world in front of your home and contemplate the wonders that you observe. See how it changes the way you feel about where you call home.
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
P.S. If you want more of my haiku in your life, you’re in luck. I’m publishing a new book of illustrated haiku next month. You can also follow me on Instagram, where I re-post many of the comics from this newsletter and at least two other haiku every day(ish).
Here are some examples of my recent non-illustrated haiku posts from Instagram:
We live in a rural county. Although our immediate neighborhood isn't as rural as yours, we are getting come winter rain. Lovely.
My kids have been fascinated with the night sky since summer. We still go out most nights, bundled up, to stargaze. I love that they love it!
