Hi Discerning Readers!
Pondering the risks of commitment.
My grandma on my mom’s side was tough, taciturn, and truthful. The name on her birth certificate was Esther Myrtle, but from the time she was a little girl, she went by Mickey.
Mickey loved four things, fishing, playing cards, Jesus, and complaining about what picky eaters her grandkids were.
She would often scold my sister and me for making commitments too lightly. She loved to quote Mary Poppins, “That sounds like a pie crust promise, easily made, easily broken.”
Mickey rarely promised to do anything. She mostly used words like maybe, we’ll see, and I doubt it.
However, she never broke a promise, and often Mickey’s maybe was more reliable than most people’s “I promise.”

I wish more people were like Mickey, viewing a promise as something sacred and only to be undertaken after careful consideration.
I’ve stepped on too many pieces of pie crust lately.
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
I love this snapshot of a powerful woman who influenced you. More please!
In 2023, I resolve to be more like Mickey when people ask me to make a promise or a commitment before telling me what's on their mind. Thank you for the inspiration, Jason!
