Hello, Wishers & Dreamers!
Today’s first haiku comic is another one from the archive. There’s a new one down below. “I Wish on Sea Stars” is from a zine I published last summer called Weirdoku. The original idea was for this to be a monthly haiku comic zine, with each month having its own theme. The first issue of Weirdoku is called A Disciple of the Sea, and featured haiku comics about the ocean, one of my favorite poetic themes.
That zine experiment didn’t work out. It turns out that doing a monthly-themed zine with 36 haiku comics takes more time than I anticipated, and the sales were not brisk enough for me to justify the effort a monthly publication requires. I did start a second issue, but it has languished for almost nine months, and will likely not be published until the fall or winter.
I haven’t given up on the zine idea. Instead, I’m modifying some of the variables and preparing to run a different experiment in the future.
The business of art is a tricky thing. I’m choosing to bring the same spirit of experimentation and wonder to the business of art that I work to bring to my art. That doesn’t mean things will work out the way I hope, but it does mean I enjoy the whole process a lot more.
If you want a PDF version of A Disciple of the Sea, it’s available in my store for just $3.
A physical paperback copy is available on Amazon in a number of different countries.
This is also your last chance to register for my virtual haiku workshop happening tomorrow, April 27th! You can find all the details for that below:
The rest of this post is for paying members of Weirdo Poetry. Below the paywall you will find a new haiku comic, a glimpse into my creative process, and more thoughts about experimenting with treating the business of art as a creative act.
