Hello, Moonbeam Drinkers!
There was a time when I wondered what my purpose was.
Saturn in transit, looking down on our blue orb an almost full moon
Wondering in the Dark
In the middle of the night last week, one of my children happened to be up at the same time as me. They were coming out of the bathroom and I was staring out the window. I asked them if they wanted to see Saturn.
The two of us walked out front and I showed them Saturn, shining just over the shoulder of the waxing moon.
We stared at the sky for a few moments, listening to the heavens, and then retreated back into the warmth of the house.
“I can’t believe you can see planets in the sky. I mean, I know you can, but I can’t believe it,” they said.
I know what they mean.
I can’t believe it either.
There was a time when I wondered what my purpose was. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to do something useful, something non-frivolous, with my life. As the Marvel character Loki often says, I felt burdened with glorious purpose—but I could never get clarity on what that purpose might be.
Then I have nights like the one last week, and I understand. What purpose could be greater than to watch the universe pass by—and to share that experience?
My purpose is to wander and wonder in the dark, then come back and share with anyone who will listen about the miracles I’ve discovered—and hopefully inspire others to notice and to wonder too.
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
