Hi Poetry Readers!
To paraphrase (badly) Tears for Fears, we all want to reign over our domain.
I don’t believe that most people want to rule the world. Sure, there are plenty of egomaniacal billionaires, would-be tyrants, and actual dictators who truly crave domain over as many people as possible.
Most of us want the autonomy to live our lives and to do our work. By work, I don’t mean job. I mean something that feels like your calling, something you love to do and can’t stop yourself from thinking about. For some, work and job coexist—but for most of us, there’s a gap.
The trick is to keep the gap narrow enough so that you can easily travel between your tide pool kingdom and whatever work you must do to pay your bills and care for your loved ones.
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
P.S. A great three minutes and ten seconds:
I love Tears For Fears. And today's haiku is definitely in my top five of yours! Bravo, my friend 👏 👏👏
*Warning - Controversial*
I really don't think anybody wants the job for being leader of the world.
A while ago, I came across a short video on YouTube (or it might have been a tail end of a news bit) that showed George W. Bush talking about his paintings that he started doing since completing his presidency.
For a short but profound moment, I thought: "Wow. What a beautiful human being. He was just so in the wrong job." Of course, I haven't forgotten the very real consequences of him being bad at his job as president. And no, I'm really not ok about it.
But my point is that being in the wrong job had a huge cost for everyone, so it's better to take a pay and status cut to not be in the wrong job. For, literally, everyone.
Imagine if Bush just became an artist? That's an alternate universe I'd be curious to explore.
