Hi—Winter is Coming!
Remembering a long-ago road trip.
There were no other cars on the road that night. Mount Shasta dominated the view in front of us. We were racing a winter storm, hoping to get over Shasta and Siskiyou pass before the storm caught up to us.
The ground has been parched when we had driven through ten days earlier. But as we began our ascent up Mount Shasta, everything was covered in fresh snow, even the road.
This was the era before we had children. I put our black Jeep Cherokee into four-wheel drive, and we began to climb. The quiet was eerie. It was only a little after nine at night. The sky was clear except for the giant, luminous moon. We’d driven this route hundreds of times, and neither of us could ever remember not seeing any other cars or trucks.
It made us question our choice to race the storm. But we both had to get back to work.
We came out of a series of hairpin turns and were awestruck by the view. The moonlight hit the snow perfectly, and everything glittered. The silence that had been unnerving just a moment ago, seemed to like a purposeful reverence for the spectacle of nature before us.
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
P.S. Thanks for all the Tears for Fears love on my last post!
Have you listened to TFFs “raoul and the kings of Spain” in full? All their music is phenomenal, this album tho...
Beautiful!
