Finding Your Oasis
The most damaging thing about our cult of capitalism is the idea that we must push ourselves hard all the time lest we be overtaken by competitors. It’s all part and parcel of the unlimited growth fallacy.
The truth is nothing can grow forever, and everything will eventually hit a size limit.
If we are to survive, we must take time to rest. In a noisy world, we need a place of peace, an oasis. My ultimate oasis is the ocean. It’s the place that always makes me whole.
When I cannot get away to the ocean, a nature walk helps me get away. On those days when I simply must be at home, I sneak in some reading or art time. These activities allow me to mentally check out, even if my body stays put.
Where is your oasis?
Artist Note
In today’s haiku comic, I’m experimenting with a different color palette. I don’t use a lot of pastels for some reason, and I thought they would look perfect for my butterflies.
I really do want to hear about how you rest and where you go to find peace.
Be the poetry you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
I’m with you on that--the ocean is a restful place of peace. I’ve been lucky to spend a lot of time at beaches in Hawaii, Oregon and Florida. They are all very different types of beaches. But the mesmerizing sounds and sights and rhythms are so restful to me, almost like watching the flames of a fire. I feel similar tranquility when flying.
I'm with you on visiting the ocean! I also like sitting in the lodge of Mt Hood gazing through the windows at the view. I love walking through a forest. At home on a regular basis I walk a lot and read printed books and cook/try new recipes. I also love visiting bookstores and libraries and trying a new restaurant. Yesterday my wife and I spent a gloriously relaxing day at the Portland Japanese Garden! I also spend time away from my phone doing analog stuff. I'm trying to do that today but I just had to read your wonderful newsletter!! I hope today is restorative for you!
