Hello, Poetry Weirdos!
About once every three months, I receive a comment or email about how my creative output is insufficiently political—which is strange, considering that everything I do is inherently political.
These comments used to bother me because it felt like people were completely missing the point of what I’m doing. But I eventually got over myself.
I don’t make my art for other people—I don’t even really make it for myself. I make art because I have to, because otherwise I will die.
I make my art as a kind of offering to Whatever.
Whatever is how my little agnostic heart conceives of whatever greater power (if any) that exists in our universe. I’m grateful to Whatever for all of the wonders, great and small, that I’m constantly running into.
Before getting in the shower this morning, I got another one of these scolding emails. I deleted it and went on with my day. While in the shower, the Paul McCartney (Wings) song, Silly Love Songs, came on my playlist.
This song brought the email back to my mind.
McCartney wrote this song in response to his friend, rival, and former bandmate John Lennon’s comments about Paul’s sappy sentimentality.
My brave anonymous critic, using a generic Hotmail email address, told me that the country doesn’t need any more silly haiku.
McCartney responded to Lennon by writing:
You'd think that people would've had enough of silly love songs
But I look around me and I see it isn't so
Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs
And what's wrong with that?
I'd like to know
'Cause here I go againI love you
I love you
I love you
I love you—”Silly Love Songs”
And this lyric brings me here this morning. You’d think the world would’ve had enough of silly haiku, but I look around and I see it isn’t so.
Some people want to fill the world with silly haiku comics. And what’s wrong with that? I’d like to know.
Here I go again.
