Oh this hit close to home today. I have a 15 yo too and his school this year shifted under new leadership to much stricter rules about making up work. He broke a bone in his knee and had a bad virus and missed school for both reasons and just can’t seem to catch up completely. And the effect is to demotivate and frustrate him. I am sorry for your daughter’s illness and frustration. And that the schools as you say at preparing kids for a nonexistent world.

A broken bone in the knee sounds rough! I don't understand why some schools, after our world experienced a global pandemic, don't have better systems for helping students with extended or frequent absences. The thing that frustrates me is that so much of the stuff that is outstanding in my daughter's case is really busy work. In one case she scored an A on a unit test, but failed the unit because not enough worksheets were turned in.

I'm grateful for your comment and sorry that your son is going through some of the same experiences.

It was fortunately a relatively minor break, his tendon tore a piece of bone away (which I have come to understand is much better than the tendon tearing, so we are grateful for that). But still! I don’t understand making it so complicated and stressful to make up work. Also his PE teacher has been downgrading him for not doing the leg work. Sigh

My kids are in their twenties now. I carry their pain and struggles, while trying to resist the urge to swoop in and solve everything/make it all better. If only a new sparkly sticker or a pack of M&Ms could still work like magic. The old adage that you're only as happy as your least happy child or something like that is so true for me. We're all doing the best we can. Hugs.

Thank you! My 18-year old recently asked me what the hardest part of being a a parent has been. i told her it's not being able to heal every hurt or to protect them from broken hearts. I know they need these experiences for their development, but it hurts me so much more when they go through hard stuff than when I do.

I agree with whoever said that being a parent means that someone else will be walking around this world with your heart in them.

“...a world that no longer exists” pretty much sums up life in general.

💜 love the late night cafe. Maybe a future zoom group?
