I hope that's what I always choose. Although, sometimes I find I'm not quite sure what kindness looks like. Being nice is fine, but kindness feels like a higher virtue.

It seems we are nerds of a feather - though a large gap in age - I like the clarity I read here, your sense of purpose is something I wish I'd had at you age ...

Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Mark

"In our world today, there is nothing more punk rock, nothing more non-conformist, than kindness and earnestness."

100% truth

If I've done anything good as a parent, it's showing my children that nice and kind aren't the same thing and that kindness is a higher virtue that takes real work.

In a conversation on Notes, I wrote that, as I get older, every cliche is slowly revealing itself as truth. And kindness being what we need is up there in the top three. Thank you for your daily poems.

Yes! I feel the same way! I've recently learned of the genre "hopepunk" (please google as I gotta keep this reply short) and that's what I want to do... We keep kindness and hope sustainable when we maintain and focus on our loves. .. One of my favorite sayings "keep close to anything that makes you glad to be alive"

I love that saying! I love hopepunk! (I've also seen it called solar punk.) I think we need a balance between the grimdark stuff and the hope. It seems to me like we will never have a shortage of people wanting to make grimdark art, and we could always use more hope (but not toxic positivity). Your work is exactly what we need!

Thank you so much!! And your work is exactly what we need too!!!! I appreciate your ability to be hopeful and simultaneously avoid toxic positivity. It's a challenge... and one I feel is well worth the effort. That art is grim dark is not what makes it "good" and neither does the depiction of the prettiest flower holding kitty make art "meaningful". It's not the resulting category the art exists in that's important it's that the artist enjoys a moment in an *honestly human* way and is brave enough to share it.

(*meaning that the artist processes life as they live it with their own senses rather than merely shuffling ideological phrases and cultural biases that had been handed to them.*)

Mmmm "solar punk" - I like that!!! Thanks so much for your comment! ❤
