Hello, Scholars!
I came across a factoid on social media that was so delightful, I had to fact-check it and then create a haiku comic about it.
some used to believe
birds migrated to the moon
and spent winter there
Where do birds go in the winter?
It’s a question almost every child asks, and it’s something we all learn before we start school. However, for thousands of years, the disappearance of birds each winter was a tremendous scientific mystery. There were a lot of theories, Aristotle hypothesized that either birds hibernated, or they transformed into other animals, such as rabbits and squirrels, during the winter, only to transform back into birds come spring.1
My favorite theory was that birds migrated to the moon during the winter. How beautiful would that be? A flock of geese flying to the moon in the middle of the night would be a magical sight.
One last note about the winter habits of birds, the scientific consensus of Earthly winter migrations wasn’t achieved until 1882.
What will the children of the future know that keeps some of our top thinkers up at night?
Be the weird you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
This idea of the things we don’t know yet works itself into my writing sometimes.
