Hello Intrepid Readers!

Today’s newsletter is a few hours later than usual. Many of the next few issues are going to be a little different. Becky is having a hard recovery from her surgery and this past week I’ve had some of my own health issues that have limited my energy and mobility.

I will still be sending out a daily newsletter. This is critical to my creative health! However, many issues for the next little bit will feature a poem or two and a simple illustration instead of a poetry comic.

This is a chance to share more of my non-haiku poems and for me to find more ways to explore wonder with you!

Baseball in February

The college team is on the diamond warming up on the
penultimate day of February. The balls snap sharply
into the mitts of the kids (young men?) in the crisp air. The
bright sun and clear skies make even this cold day feel like
spring. Perhaps the cantankerous groundhog was right this
year—spring may come early.
Each catch-playing duo has its own rhythm as they whip the
ball back and forth, oblivious to the snap, thwap, and whoosh
of their neighbors. Smiles burn as brightly on their faces
as the winter sun lighting up the park. Chatter and chuckles
pepper the infield as the balls fly back and forth
and in the background music blares from a playlist that
must have been chosen by a coach—
anchored as it is by mid-90s Pearl Jam and Tom Petty.
