It was Picasso who told “Bad artists copy. Good artists steal”

Yup, and now most people associate that with Kleon's book. He did what Picasso advised and it has worked well for him.

It seems a good reading

“I also view all of my comics as existing in the same surreal multiverse. Reusing images helps tie all of my work together.” Love this idea of yours.

I love Austin’s book! And his other two, Show Your Work! and Keep Going are just as good.

Yes! That whole trilogy is so good. I think I leant my physical copies of all three to someone, because I can’t find them anywhere. I was looking to reread them so I’ll just have to buy them again 🤣

It’s so smart to use your dreams as imaginative inspiration. The practice of reusing different elements gives your work signature style that’s all your own. I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself, making a good schedule, etc. Please don’t burn out--we want to keep enjoying your work for a long time to come!

Thanks, Ann! A mistake To be made too many times is when some endeavor starts to heat up, I add too much fuel to the fire and find I can’t handle the resulting bonfire! Weirdo Poetry is too important to me to allow myself that mistake again. I’m forcing myself to scale responsibly. 🤣

Thanks. I’m sure you recognize them from my earlier comic where you made that incredible beach music piece!

I’ve found the subconscious constantly metabolizes experiences and offers fresh inspiration or new layers or nuances to known ideas. Good stuff, Jason!

Thanks! Yes, I think our intuition is a manifestation of our subconscious trying to get us to do the things that part of us already understands we need

Dreams are our unharnessed thoughts and dreams slipping the bonds of gravity, social convention. Too bad they are often so tricky to remember and understand.

Beautifully put. Slipping the bonds of gravity and social convention indeed.

I steal from everyone everywhere. Its one of my favorite things to do. I think of it as -- the walking dead, or dancing with their angels... Stealing for me, is simply about recognizing other peoples hand in your work, and falling in love with its discovery, as an extension of what life is.

I love this framing! Walking the dead. I do think our culture is too keen on originality and not appreciative enough of the immortal aspects of influence and inspiration
