Hi Supers!
Tell me about something cool you saw live.
the ocean’s sermon
filled with fury, given to
a lone congregant
I saw Green Day in June of 1994. They had just released their breakthrough album, Dookie, in February of that year. When the band had booked the festival, they were a prominent local punk band and were given an early afternoon slot.
I was already a massive Green Day fan. My friends and I had just graduated high school, and we were looking to a great day of music.
By the time of the show, Green Day was one of the hottest acts on the planet. The pop-punk trio was brilliant, blazing through three of their new hits. But their time slot was soon over. The band refused to leave the stage. Billy Joe Armstrong told the crowd to yell if they didn’t want the band to stop performing.
We yelled.
They played a couple more songs, and then someone from backstage came out and tried to get the band to leave and took the microphone. Billy Joe wrested the mic back and yelled for us to, “tear out the fucking seats!” Then the sound cut out.
Bille Joe started to take off his clothes. He was eventually escorted off by police officers.
It was one of the most high-energy sets I’ve ever seen.
What about you? What memorable live performances have you seen?
Cheers,
Jason
P.S. My printer is having some supply chain issues. Wild Divinity will still launch on January 30th, but it will take a bit longer before I have signed copies available. I will be putting up the pre-order page for signed copies as soon as I can.
Dookie is my all-time favorite Green Day album. I was just listening to it the other day, in fact! Your concert experience sounds wild!
I used to go see the Dave Matthews Band once or twice a summer. They’re such talented musicians, and the atmosphere is exactly what you want for a summer concert. Once, in Bethel Woods, they started playing “Don’t Drink the Water” and the skies opened up. It was absolutely pouring and everyone was going ballistic. Dave did too. It was awesome! I’ll never forget that concert moment.
The Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour back in 1989. And sometime around then, there was an event at Madison Square Garden called "Garden Party", with lots of groups from the 50s and 60s. My parents took us. It was finals week. I brought a textbook with me and was annoyed, until the music started and my parents morphed into teenagers, standing on the seats and dancing their butts off. Still a favorite memory!
