That painting from your grandmother is magnificent—such a meaningful and enduringly inspiring gift. 🎨🖼️🦅

Now that she’s gone, I cherish it even more. She started painting in retirement and is a great example to me of finding it’s never too late to start living a creative life

Yes indeed, re it never being too late to start living that one “wild and precious life” in a creatively meaningful way. And sorry to hear that she is gone now, and yet, she certainly lives on in you and clearly inspires you to be your beautiful, singular self. Imagine what she might say if she could see you now,...? I’d imagine that she would be so delighted to see you soaring. ✨🦅💫

My great grandmother (who lived until I was ~12), hung nearly e.v.e.r.y. drawing I made whilst visiting with her when I was little on the wall in her living room (the drawings were still up there each time I visited), and if I said “not this one, it’s not very good and there isn’t much room left on the wall”, she would say, “I love it, put it right up there”, and so I did. The love of a grandparent lives on and on... literally within us. 🌱💚💫 Thanks for creating and sharing all that you do--I so enjoy your haikus!

Jason, one of my favorite painters began at age 82. She has otherworldly talents.

Wow, 14 is so young to be an Eagle Scout-- way to go! You must’ve been born with a strong drive to do big projects. May it continue to serve you well always!

Thanks, Ann! I was a bit of an overachiever for much of my life, but I spent too much time achieving stuff others wanted for me instead of figuring out what I wanted. I actually enjoyed scouting much more once I had nothing else to chase. Now I’m working on doing big things that make my heart feel wonder or joy!

To being connected to what matters to us, such an important goal.

It seems so much harder to obtain that sometimes

It is a work in progress, and perhaps we get glimpses or times when it happens more easily than others. Seeking wonder and joy is something that comes through beautifully in your writing and drawing.

Love this so much Jason! Eagles are one of my favorite birds and I consider them to be spirit guides. There is nothing like the experience of hearing them call to each other, being a closer proximity to them, and getting that signal from the divine:

"Seeing the eagles perched up hundreds of feet in the trees, watching. the river and calling to their fellow birds across the way felt like a signal from the divine that I need to live a wilder life—one that is both closer to nature and less constrained by the choices of others."

Thanks! It was incredible to hear and see them up close on the trail I walk all the time!

Perhaps they have found a new place to roost. Your post reminds me to go for a drive along the river to look for eagles. We always have some extra eagles in the winter, they come down river to fish when it freezes up north.

I love that final piece:

"juvenile eagle

squawks about his solitude

while looking for fish"

Tells such a story in only 3 lines!

Delighted by the poems and the art, and by your resolution to live a wilder life. Thanks for letting us in to that resolution, Jason.

The first illustration tickled me the most. I respect and admire eagles and am awed by them, but honestly I identify more with (okay, wild) ducks. That particular trio of ducks looks completely unbothered about being yelled at by eagles, and I love them for that. To each their own role model: mine, the dgaf ducks. 💚

Thank you! 🤣 The ducks I saw in real life didn't care one bit about those eagles. Three cheers for dgaf ducks!

I enjoyed these poems, thank you. I hope this year you are able to be wild and free, and fly higher than you ever imagined.
