Where is the Magic?
The C.S Lewis classic, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe has one of the most famous magical portals in all of literature. But my favorite portal between worlds is in the third book of the Chronicles of Narnia1 series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
In that book, Lucy, Edmund, and Eustice enter Narnia by falling through a painting of a ship, are tossed into the sea, and are nearly drowned.
Magic is dangerous and unpredictable, after all.
One advantage of never having fully grown up is that I still see magic everywhere. I see dragons, pirate ships, and monsters in the clouds in the sky and the shadows of my bedroom at night. A fallen leaf is just as easily a fae treasure map as it is a potential sail for a tiny boat.
Lucy, Edmund, and Eustice learned that magic lurks in the mundane. My job as an artist is to seek out all of the hidden magic places I can and share them with everyone willing to listen.
