Hello, Night Owls!
Do you wake up and watch the night?
stirring at midnight full moon and Jupiter sing celestial ballad
I am thinking about creating a virtual spoken-word poetry event for the poets and poetry lovers of Substack. Is this something you would be interested in watching or participating in?
Around Home at Night
When I can’t sleep, I sit and watch the night from my window. Soaking in the quiet and stillness I often see unexpected things. I’ve seen foxes, bats, owls, and deer. I’ve also seen satellites, shooting stars, and planets.
Sometimes the changes in the seasons are easier to perceive when you cannot see as well. Trees look different in the moonlight and the sunlight.
I said I soak in the quiet and the stillness, but these only describe the environment inside my house. Outside, the night is full of kinetic stealth and full of its own songs. My favorite nighttime ballads are sung by the heavenly bodies.
As most of us are diurnal, most haiku is about the world under the sun. But the moon presides over an equally fantastic realm of wonder.
Haiku Prompt
Write a haiku or chain of haiku about something from the nighttime. Feel free to use the traditional 5-7-5 format or any other form you’re comfortable with.
Please share your poems in the comments, not only does this delight me, but it also helps give others the courage to share their poems in public!
Be the poetry you want to see in the world!
Cheers,
Jason
