If a mac I feel your pain, I steer clear of the newer system updates just for that reason: every stinking update involves disconnecting and then reconnecting the power source, removing all usb peripherals, repeated attempts at zapping the pram on startup and various keyboard commands. Even then you might still have to bring it to the apple store just so some dweeb can tell you that you should have the latest Mac. aghgghhh. Good luck my friend.
It’s a Mac. Your description of the ridiculous steps to upgrade is spot on. I really thought I had auto updates turned off! Apple used to make my life easier, now all they do is find more ways to make my stuff obsolete faster.
